SMRU Consulting has developed a real-time passive acoustic buoy (CAB Sentinel) that provides real-time acoustic detection of a wide range of marine mammals.
The Sentinel consists of a gravity anchored communications buoy that uses frequency hopping spread spectrum VHF radio to up-link to a base station. This base station can be either on shore, in the cloud, or on a vessel at sea. The Sentinel can also use LTE Cell Modem, or a satellite uplink.
The Sentinel system has been field tested in both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans and is in active commercial use monitoring the presence of marine mammals and marine soundscapes.
The Sentinel can also be used to provide ISO standard real-time sound field verification which allows real-time display of pile-driving sound and real-time monitoring of the operation of noise mitigation equipment such as bubble curtains.
